This style of fish hook carved in Genuine New Zealand jade has been found in archaeological sites around Golden Bay.  They are designed to turn and jam in the fishes throat rather than jagging with a barb.  Even though they were just fish hooks they were very beautifully carved and were embellished with a fin and manaia (birds head).  Real works of art. 

Styalized fish hooks have many storys attached to them and were the most commonly worn item.  The common meaning being provision, respect, good luck and safe travel over water.
